OK, let me take a break from ranting about the NC vs Chicago meetups. Indulge with for another long-ish post.

For some reason I’m really nostalgic today … maybe since the end of the year is approaching, I’m in a reflective mood (lame, I know). Anyway, one of my proudest and fondest memories at work was the time when I got to organize a 80’s-themed gay prom.

My client at the time, Stoli Vodka, wanted to do something in support of the LGBT and we came up with throwing a gay prom since many within the community did not have the best memories of their proms and most certainly did not bring who they wanted as their date.

I had SO much fun organizing the event. We involved the whole Chicago LGBT community by allowing people to nominate themselves into the running for prom court and everyone got to vote on who made it and ultimately who made Prom King and Queen. We had trolley transportation that took people to and from Boystown & Andersonville (Chicago’s gay-borhoods) to the Prom. The event was and looked amazing. It was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Towers on Michigan Avenue and we had local 80’s cover band, Sixteen Candles as our entertainment.

We weren’t really sure how far people who carry the 80’s theme but everyone totally jumped right in. Some people dressed formal, some dress totally crazy, and others dressed like they would as an 80’s high school student.

Even though I was working the event, Will and I did have the opportunity to enjoy ourselves and slow danced together to Prince’s Purple Rain. Couldn’t have asked for better.

The Prom itself was great but the fun carried on to the Gay Pride Parade where we built a float and had Sixteen Candles and the Prom King and Queen showcased. Our float was so amazing that we won 1st place for “Best Commercial Float”.

In the end a large donation was made to the Howard Brown Community Center, which is the Midwest’s largest LGBT health organization.

This was a very proud time in my career that I got to do something that directly benefited my community. There’s been rumors around the office that the event will be making a triumphant return. I sincerely hope it does.
